For fans of: Classic soul originals
What they're saying: In a four-and-a-half star review Allmusic sums it up as “the quintessential Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band record, Express Yourself displays the purposefully loose rhythms and shout vocals that would make this band a legend in soul circles.” Upon reissue the Second Disc blog notes it as “an adventurous touchstone of psychedelic funk and soul” and Spill magazine calls Express Yourself an “integral piece of the history of funk and R&B music”.
What we say: Express Yourself is a very welcome reissue of the 1970 classic from this L.A. group. Here is a great under-appreciated record and group for those looking to expand their soul collection beyond the basics. And is ‘Express yourself’ the greatest song of all time? At least in the top 100.
Further Listening: Of course famously sampled here.
