For fans of: Whimsical and contemplative folk-rock / songwriting in search of wisdom.
What they're saying: A lovely review from Pop Matters describe the songwriter’s concerns on Ma as “idiosyncratic and spiritual” while a review on Pitchfork calls it his most cohesive work in more than a decade. Also read more from Devendra himself in a deep interview from the excellent Aquarium Drunkard blog, saying “This record is everything I’d want to say to my kid, regardless if I have one or not.”
What we say: Banhart is wearing some different influences on his sleeve this go a round, doing his best Leonard Cohen/Cat Stevens mashup. Ma is truly one of the most cohesive records and a very enjoyable listen.
