First, Last, and Favorite is our column where we get to know an artist a little better through the music they love with them choosing a First big record in life, the Last thing they’ve been jamming, and an all time Favorite. This edition we get to talk records with Dylan from Weep Wave.
Weep Wave, for the uninitiated, is a manic rock trio native to the Pacific Northwest. The Seattle group has been around for a few years now and their latest record S.A.D. released earlier this year has sneakily managed to be one of our best selling local records of 2019 so far! It’s a ramshackle and rollicking affair, covering a wide range of sounds/instrumentation over its length. We’re hearing rumors of another EP in the works and we recommend staying tuned for updates. Give ‘Welcome Home’, one of S.A.D.’s real rockers, a spin:
Dylan Fuentes the voice of Weep Wave was kind enough to shed some light on some of his formative listening experiences. In his own words.
First
Modest Mouse Lonesome Crowded West
I'm not sure if Weep Wave would exist without this band. I started listening to Modest Mouse in middle school and just couldn't get enough. They just blew my mind. Issac Brock's lyrics had a deep impact on me at that age. His lyrics and style are probably the biggest influence of my own lyrics still. When I met the the other members of the band for the first time, we all bonded over our love for Modest Mouse. We pretty much start every tour with blasting this album. It's the perfect road trip album, half the songs are about driving or you car breaking down. The songs get more and more relatable the more we tour and see the country.
Last
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Infest the Rats Nest
I recently bought a 1986 Nissan 300ZX which to me is the raddest car from the 80's. I have been blasting Infest the Rats Nest in that car and it feels like I'm driving around town in Heavy Metal Time Machine. This album RIPS. I love how versatile this band is and how they just do whatever they want. I also love how this album is a speed metal concept album about the post apocalyptic Earth due to the impending environmental collapse. There is No Planet B y'all. Most us went to their recent show at The Paramount and it was just insane. The crowd was going crazy and the band just killed it. I'm guessing it was what seeing Metallica was like for my parents back in the day
Favorite
Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane over the Sea
This is album is very near and dear to most of us in the band and is one of my favorite Autumn albums. The whole album is so vastly different from anything else out there. The instrumentation is just on another plane of existence and the emotion that Jeff Mangum carries in his lyrics and singing is just too much to take in sometimes. Mangum is another heavy influencer of my own lyrics. In the Aeroplane really changed the way I thought about how an album's flow and song order can have a huge impact on the overall feel of the piece. This album feels like one really long song with cohesive theme and feel rather than just a collection of songs. Now whenever we are working on new material I try and picture how everything will work together and compliment each other when it's all done.
