VAMPIRE WEEKEND ONLY GOD WAS ABOVE US - COLUMBIA CD/LP
As much as the album embraces the past, it’s also about how hard it is to really get your arms around it. The band’s first album was jubilant: young men in boat shoes encountering a world of privilege, enjoying its spoils with a crooked eye. On Contra, they were even more suspicious of the world of excess, wondering what it was all for. By Modern Vampires of the City, Koenig had moved on from mere materiality and wanted to get to the bottom of everything. And, after some time away from such heavy and heady questions, he returned as a proud Grateful Deaddisciple, jamming about the Earth and love on Father of the Bride. Here, he asks, “Now is it strange I can’t connect?” He and his bandmates answer the question musically, suggesting that you can come close, but you can’t ever go back. - PITCHFORK
THE BLACK KEYS OHIO PLAYERS - NONESUCH CD/LP
In many ways, Ohio Players imagines what the Keys might have sounded like had they been born into the eclectic mid- to late-Nineties that Beck ruled rather than the minimalist rock-is-back early-2000s. It was a period when every genre — indie rock, hip-hop, trip-hop, rave, and exotica — melted into mellow gold. That era isn’t as mythic as the Mississippi Delta or a weed-fogged Seventies arena show. But it’s a little closer to Auerbach and Carney’s lived experience, and on Ohio Players, they’re at home in every groove. - ROLLING STONE
KHRUANGBIN A LA SALA - DEAD OCEANS CD/LP/CASSETTE
To cover new territory, it helps to be grounded too, and there’s a healthy foundation on ‘A La Sala’. Each song is appropriately seasoned with dubby beats, field recordings, hooky guitar riffs and basslines, all distinct enough to pique your attention but never dominating space. The run from ‘Pon Pón’, ‘Todavía Viva’ and ‘Juegos y Nubes’ are led by Mark Speer’s nifty guitar playing; Laura Lee’s vocals and harmonies provide a something of an anchor on ‘Hold Me Up (Thank You)’; Donald ‘DJ’ Johnson’s drumming never peaks or flails, such is the design of soundscape he operates in. It’s a band in perfect sync once again. - NME
