For fans of: Ethereal Folk-Music
What they're saying: Here is Chris Sawle at the Backseat Mafia describing the unique Renée Reed: “Renée: she’s such a talent, this absolute mastery of guitars, harmonic intricacy, a voice clear and honest and true the like of which you may not have encountered in intelligent songwriting outside Karen Carpenter, definitely Margo Guryan. Kinda wow actually.” And Bob Fish of Folk Radio praises the record’s lo-fi mysticism as such: “Using the most rudimentary of equipment she is able to spin songs of pure gold. You can and should get lost in this album and let its spell fill the air. Renée Reed has found a most magical place.”
What we say: Renée Reed’s self-titled debut on Keeled Scales is the sort of mystifying and unique folk record that doesn’t come along often. Stripped down four-track recordings from a songwriter that seems to have found her muse. Puts you in the same headspace as some of the early Elliott Smith or Cat Power recordings, enchanting downer music.
