First, Last, and Favorite is our semi-regular feature where we get to know an artist via the records they love. In this edition we got to pick the brain of Goat Girl’s drummer Rosy Bones .
For the uninitiated, Goat Girl is one of the finer exports of the recently red-hot UK post-punk underground. Their latest record On All Fours finds the group expanding their sound and themes after 2018’s lean and mean self-titled record. Now the grimy guitars rub up against ample electronics and moody vocal melodies. The band here explore a wider range of sonic and lyrical perspectives. It’s got that sound of an inspired band synthesizing an expansive range of influences, we highly recommend the new single ‘Sad Cowboy’ linked below.
To help illuminate the influences that make the band, Rosy let us know a little about her first, last, and favorite records, in her own words:
FIRST
Rihanna Good Girl Gone Bad
I remember this being one of the first albums I got where I felt I was old enough to choose for myself. I was in HMV with my family, my dad said we could pick any CD we wanted which was very exciting. I chose Good Girl Gone Bad, the packaging was one of those cases where you pushed it in on the side to open it which didn’t last very long lol. I put it on my mp3 player and absolutely rinsed it. I then came back to it after a few years had passed and it completely held up. The title track ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ had a real effect on me when I was young - it created such a vivid visual for me for some reason. And then others like ‘Breaking Dishes’ absolutely slap. Long live Rihanna, and take as much time as you need to release new music - no pressure coming from me.
LAST
ppcocaine ft. NextYoungin ‘3 Musketeers’
I found out about ppcocaine early summer of 2020 through tiktok. The first song I heard was ‘DDLG’ and I was instantly hooked. I obsessively showed everyone I knew and they weren’t too sure haha. I just love how explicit the lyrics are and how much of a gay icon she is. I’ve put her song with her partner (who we all thought were best friends for ages and then they announced they’ve been together and in love this whole time) as it’s maybe a safer one to ease into her. I just love how abrasive her voice is as well and find her intonation and rhythm really original and captivating.
FAVORITE
MHYSA NEVAEH
Although this only came out last year it has become a firm favourite of mine. I can’t count how many times I’ve listened to it, and it still surprises me. It’s such an authentic record, and it inspired me to be more free when I make music. I love her voice so much and the music is so eerie, experimental and beautiful. The song from this album that I have listened to over and over and over is ‘no weapon formed against you shall prosper’. MHYSA’s vocals with that dirty synth just really get to me. It’s a fucking masterpiece. Also ‘na na drift’ is such a bop. NEVAEH is a work of art.
