What they're saying: The experts at Decibel magazine throw the latest record from Napalm Death into some elite company: “Throes is a single-mindedly furious album that, like Cro-Mags’ The Age of Quarrel, Suicidal Tendencies’ debut and Black Flag’s My War, leaves scorched earth after each listen.” Consequence Of Sound’s Joseph Schafer praises the band’s willingness to take stylistic risks after decades of work: “On the back half of the record, though, they indulge wholeheartedly in the art rock and post-punk influences that have long colored the edges of their music.” Likewise a review from The Quietus revels in the ‘grindstitustion’s’ willingness to shift gears for full tracks to pursue new sounds, observing the “intensity overall never drops off even when the tempos do.”
What we say: We love it. You’re lucky when a band you’ve followed for decades can still deliver something sounding this fresh. Throes Of Joy In The Jaws Of Defeatism is true to the Napalm Death sound but with new angles.
