Staff Picks: Blake Babies - Sunburn
For fans of: Alt Rock Jangle
What they're saying: Stewart Mason at AllMusic has this high praise for Sunburn: “it's in many ways the last great college rock album, the album that's the pinnacle of the U.S. indie guitar scene of the late '80s” adding that the record is made up of “punchy guitar pop songs with lyrics filled with (Juliana) Hatfield's trademark combination of innocence, brashness, wit, and moments of extreme self-doubt.” And here is The Blake Babies own John Strohm speaking on the record’s timelessness at Talkhouse: “It’s even wilder to listen to the music with the knowledge of what indie music sounds like today, and realize it still sounds contemporary.”
What we say: A perfect hot weather record, hence the name Sunburn. If you’ve never dived into Juliana Hatfield & co’s early work I can’t recommend it more. - K
