Staff Picks: Spirit Was - Heaven's Just a Cloud
For fans of: Dark & Dynamic Guitar Rock
What they're saying: Kris Handel at Post-Trash praises the dynamic range of Spirit Was: “Corbo's guitar-work is masterful in the quieter moments but he is also unafraid to dirty everything up and unleash torrents of heavy chords and dark textures in various manners.” adding: “The balance that’s achieved between tenderness and menace is perfect and the amount of time and care put into this project over the past few years clearly proves it’s worth.” And Stereogum’s James Rettig had this to say of Heaven’s Just A Cloud: “The album alternates between a tenderhearted, near-country warble and blistering intensity. There’s a mysticism that hangs over Heaven’s Just A Cloud and all of Corbo’s songwriting — it’s zoned-out and superstitious, circling back to lyrics and ideas he had when he was with LVL UP — proven water rites and floating spirits and daydreams that turn into nightmares — and shading them in with ever darker hues.”
What we say: For everyone missing LVL UP, we've got treats galore coming from the now scattered band (see: Dave Benton with Trace Mountains) and now Nick Corbo with Spirit Was. This is such a phenomenal record, it has definitely been stuck in the play pile since my first listen. - K
