Staff Picks: The Umbrellas - Self-Titled
For fans of: Jingle-Jangle Pop
What they're saying: The Big Takeover call the Umbrellas a band that is “both intimately conversant with indiepop history but also unburdened by it, a band with the song-crafting chops and spirit to take familiar elements and create for themselves a fresh new sound.” And at the A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed blog they had this to say of the SF combo’s proper debut: “The Umbrellas are hardly content with being just a jangle-pop band, and are fully capable of offering an American spin on what The Pastels did so well earlier, or a Brit indie-flavored variation of Calvin Johnson's laconic DIY aesthetic. That The Umbrellas make everything on The Umbrellas catchy and affecting is even further praise.”
What we say: The latest Slumberland release is SF's indie pop outfit The Umbrellas. If you're a fan of the jingle-jangle or trust most everything Slumberland does (like I do) then this is a release for you. -K
