Staff Picks: Ash Walker - Aquamarine
For fans of: Both dusty-grooved jazz and contemporary sounds in dubby down-tempo electronic music.
What they're saying: The UK based DJ aptly self-describes as “Underwater Jazz”, and goes in to more depth on his creative process in a recent Bandcamp feature, including his tendencies to embrace sonic imperfections as necessary details. A glowing Soundblab review notes the studious nature Aquamarine as it deftly channels and recombines many of the finer and spacier moments of 70s jazz and soul.
What we say: Ash Walker’s sound is tailor made for the record-nerd. The grooves and influence-nods are all top notch. Aquamarine mysteriously manages to conjure some of the best elements of trip-hop and acid-jazz while being a new thing unto itself.
