Staff Picks: Gas - Zauberberg
For fans of: A-list ambient music.
What they're saying: A central album of 1990s ambient minimal techno, this recent series of LP reissues is detailed in The Quietus', "Celebrating 20 Years Of Wolfgang Voigt's GAS". Pitchfork lavished much praise upon the box-set that also contained Zauberberg.
What we say: Wolfgang Voigt, the co-maven of Cologne's Kompakt label, reissues his second GAS album this month after being twenty years out of print. Inspired equally by Detroit techno's minimal futurism of a decade before, and Thomas Mann's German romantic novel, "The Magic Mountain", this is a pulsing, ethereal late night venture through the Alpen forests of Germany-Austria-Switzerland.
