2018 Best-Sellers: Electronic Music
2018 is a wrap, and we sold plenty of records in this wild and weird year. We’ll be spending the next few weeks reviewing our best sellers of the recently completed calendar year. Here are our top-ten selling electronic music albums across 2018:
10. ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER AGE OF
Age Of is one of the most adventurous records on this or any of our charts, Daniel Lopatin’s Oneohtrix Point Never continues to break ground and astound with each new release. As such OPN has become the gateway sounds for a whole generation of experimental music fans.
9. BOARDS OF CANADA MUSIC HAS THE RIGHT TO CHILDREN
Boards Of Canada’s sounds have aged really well, they were in a lot of ways a major predecessor to whole sub-genres of 21st century synth voyagers. Their 1998 debut still sounds great, and has steadily been in print for a little bit now!
8. DJ KOZE KNOCK KNOCK
Knock Knock was a little bit of a surprise 2018 breakout. But once on board, we couldn’t quit playing it, it was always in heavy rotation around the shop last year. It is one of those rare records as suited for a deep listen, the dance-floor, or an afternoon at work!
7. DAFT PUNK RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES
This 2013 party-starter / love-letter to disco and vintage electronic music has never really slowed down selling since it’s release! This SOLID record helped solidify Daft Punk as one of the undisputed masters of the genre.
6. THUNDERCAT DRANK
Our shoppers were so stoked on 2017’s best selling electronic record at our shop, Thundercat’s Drunk, that it’s “chopped & screwed” tribute remix album made it all the way to number six! Simple premise, arguably gimmicky, but makes for a super fun listen!
5. FEVER RAY PLUNGE
From late 2017, but Fever Ray’s latest had a great 2018 too! Plunge is an intense record, experimental and thrilling and riskier than her debut. Originals were appropriately packaged in a bag of blood. Get one of those?
4. ODESZA MOMENT APART
Another late 2017 release from this Northwestern duo who’ve gone on to be among of the most successful electronic artist working. Equal parts ethereal and excitement, look for them headlining a festival near you.
3. DAFT PUNK DISCOVERY
A great record for those “discovering” electronic music! This record is probably in the first batch bought by a lot of our first time buyers. Appropriately, released in 2001 this has become a standard and a classic in the couple decades since it arrived.
2. NILS FRAHM ALL MELODY
Long time shop favorite Nils Frahm managed to make what is probably his most accessible and engaging record yet in 2018’s All Melody. This is modern composition for everybody, experimental music without pretense, and most importantly an absolutely beautiful listening experience.
1. APHEX TWIN COLLAPSE
And 2018’s best-selling electronic release was an EP! Well it is a long EP. This is also classic Aphex Twin, a showcase of the artist doing what he does best, wild spastic beats and unexpected sounds. Richard D. James is still operating at 100% capacity after decades and we love it!
